Art, aesthetic education and sustainability

Course description

The term aesthetic education has its cultural-philosophical background in Friedrich Schiller’s work “On the Aesthetic Education of Man” (1795). The term “aesthetic education” describes an approach to educational science and social work by use of aesthetic means in which sensory experiences act as the starting point for human education and development. This does not mean only experiences that can be experienced through artistic works. In taking the meaning of the origin of the word “aesthetics” from the Greek language (Greek ἴσθησις: sensory perception), aesthetic education aims at the formation of thoughtful perception and sensitivity in all areas of life.

Aesthetic education does not treat education primarily as the acquisition of knowledge, in which thought trumps perception, but rather as the result of sensory experiences, which can be a source of knowledge and insight.

So in aesthetic education, the object is to draw on both awareness and the practice of perception, and thus build the best cooperation and symbiosis.

This perception is what we need in order to face the world around us that is becoming more and more complicated, thus causing climate change that has become a realistic threat to us and our planet.

In this course the participants can work on their perception and on their creative skills as well as on their knowledge towards the environment and its protection.
