Philosophical counselling and maieutics

Improving quality of life through critical thinking

Course description

The search for the good in life is rooted in the Socratic tradition. In this course, we delve into the philosophy of Stoicism and Stoic therapy that evolved out of this tradition. This is a logic-based counselling using conductive reasoning and critical thinking. We search for general, commonly held truths that shape beliefs and scrutinize their consistency with other held beliefs. We examine the way our different worldviews, narratives and perspectives inform the way we think and act.

We formulate a series of questions that test logic and fact. This is intended to help an individual or a team discover their beliefs about various issues, explore definitions and define general characteristics. We support and guide participants through self-reflection and critical analysis as a means to consider issues, needs and goals.

Methodology

Philosophical counselling is a form of therapy or counselling that investigates basic life issues such as what is a meaningful life, what is true love, what is morally right or wrong.

Participants receive a practical toolkit of methods. Some methodology preparations for the roles of counsellor and counselee are provided as a prerequisite for the course.
